To ensure that the Cook Islands is in a state of readiness and preparedness in case of any health threats such as the bird-flu, is the main issue of discussion during the four day meeting of health stakeholders at the Muri Beach Club in Ngatangiia, Rarotonga.
According to Dr Aumea Hermann Tepai, the Director of Community Health Services, the meeting will finally come up with a Work Plan for 2008-2010 on how to address emergency health situations in the country.
Key topics include the link between humans and animals and the infections that can be passed on to humans; how to isolate and treat outbreaks of infections and diseases, reporting of events and responding to those reports.
Tepai said a National Emergency Response Unit will be one of the outcomes of the workplan which needs to be finalised at the end of the meeting.
The unit will be in place to report and address emergency health issues and deal with diseases introduced into the country from all ports of entry.
Director of Health Heather Aitu says the workplan is to encourage greater safety for people and stop the spread of infections and diseases as quickly as possible.
World Health Organisation Officer for International Health Regulations Dr Li Ailain is providing technical assistance with the workplan.
